This bouncy rhyming book is the perfect read aloud for Kindergarten class. It is fun and silly, and kids just love it! This book covers counting and opposites and of course features the signature rhymes we all associate with Dr Seuss. Children will meet an assortment of zany creatures. The Nook with a book on a hook and a Gox that likes to box.

The rhymes are wonderful. I love that there are so many rhyming words each page. Take for example the page that features the words "Yink, pink, ink, book, and drink." It very silly and the prefect way to read/hear a variety of words that end in "ink." We celebrate Dr Seuss birthday on March 3rd, so it seemed the perfect time to sneak in some fun learning with a Dr Seuss rhyming words game.

How does rhyming help with reading?

Rhyming pushes children to LISTEN for the different SOUNDS in the words. This is all part of what educators call phonemic awareness. In a nutshell, Phonemic awareness is the ability to hear, identify, and manipulate phenomes. Phenomes are the individual elements of sounds in any language. Being able to hear and identify sounds is critical skill to develop. In fact, scientists have discovered that being able to do this in Kindergarten is a strong predictor of later reading success.

Rhyming also allows students play with language. As they do this, they start to learn about word families. Dr Seuss models this beautifully. For example, if we learn the word "Book," we can change the first letter to "H" and voila we can read the word hook as well! Why stop there? Let's include Nook, cook, and look as well. Identifying the sounds and changing one letter to make new words opens a whole new world for young readers.

What is the best way to introduce rhyming words at the Kindergarten level?

Most Kindergarten kids quickly pick up on the fact that rhyming words have the same ending sounds. The best way to introduce them to this concept is to read Rhyming books often.  Click here for a great list of books that teach rhyming.

As you read use your voice to emphasize the rhyming words. You can also pause and allow the children to fill in the blanks. As a class you can also make lists of rhyming words from any given book. Invite the children to make up new rhyming words. Don't worry if they are nonsense words, look at Dr Seuss! The idea is that children are practicing those ending sounds.

Games are your secret weapon. They encourage children to practice rhyming in a fun and hands-on way. We've created a FREE rhyming words game for you to use with your class. You know how much kids of this age love to play. It will not be hard to encourage them to do this activity.

The game is based on the popular card game Memory. There are 20 cards that feature 10 rhyming pairs that use words from the book. Each pair consists of one fishbowl and one fish card for each pair. We've also included a page of blank cards that are editable, so you can add some words if you wish. You need to install the font KG Primary Penmanship if you want your cards to look the same as the rest in the set. Download this font for free here

To edit, just highlight the word "word" and type in the rhyming words you wish to use. This game is perfect for literacy center or early finishers. You can also direct parents to this post and encourage them to make a set to use at home.

Simply download the file and print onto cardstock. The last page of the download is a design for the back of the cards. This is purely optional, and you can certainly leave the backs of the cards blank if you wish.  If you want two sided cards, just print pages 2-6. Then place them back into the printer and make 5 copies of page 6 on the back of the cards. I would laminate the cards, so they last longer, and then cut them out. That's all there is to it! Now you are ready to play.

Rhyming Pairs Game

For children just starting to read and rhyme.

  1. Sort the cards into two piles, a pile of goldfish bowl cards and another pile of fish cards.
  2. Have students pick out the fish card from the pile and read the word aloud. Then fish through (no pun intended) the goldfish bowl pile to find the card with the matching rhyming word.
  3. When you find a matching pair, place them in a separate pile.

For children progressing in their reading and rhyming skills

  1. Mix up the cards and place face them down in rows.
  2. Invite the player to turn over two cards. The cards stay in the same place.
  3. The idea is to find the rhyming pairs.
  4. If the cards are a rhyming pair, remove them from play and turn over two more cards.
  5. If the cards a rhyming pair, turn them back face down.
  6. Play continues until all the cards have been picked up.

Hint: Try to remember where the cards are placed, so you don't have to guess where the matches are.

Playing with a friend

The first player turns over two cards as above. If the cards are a rhyming pair, the player gets another go. If they ae not, turn them back face down and play passes to the next player.

  • You can play competitively- the player with the most pairs wins.
  • Or cooperatively – how fast can you find all the pairs?

Bonus Activity

When all the rhyming pairs are found – challenge children to pick a pair at random and create their won rhyming sentence. Bonus points if you can add in any extra words. Remember it doesn't have to make a lot of sense! Can you jump and land with a bump? Don't end up with a lump on your hump!
